There is a rule that college coaches cannot coach local sports teams unless all members of the team live within 50 miles. What is the criteria for where you "live"? If your family "home" is in the Bay Area, but you attend boarding school in Southern California, where do you "live"?

it would be based on your residence...where your family home is.

As a first time user I am confused as to where to start or how to post a question so I hooked in here and I believe this is out of order. Sorry.

Question: Does an visit and workout with an NAIA school count as an "Official visit" toward the 5 official visits allowed by the NCAA?

I am a Div.I football scholarship player's parent. I would like to occasionally after games pay for a meal of another player. This is usually an out of state player who's parents aren't always able to make the game. When they do come we all dine together. When they are unable to come, we invite the player to dinner anyway. Even though 16.11.1.11 provides that:(d) Occasional meals to team members provided by the parent of a student-athlete at any location is permissible. the universtiy says we must provide three days notice with prior approval. Is this in line with NCAA guideline or is the university being overly cautious.

I am aware of a coach "requesting" that the players show up three weeks before school starts, live off-campus, complete supervised work-outs, and compete in "pick-up" games whose line-ups are defined by the coach and the games are "suprvised" by an assistant coach. This sounds extremely out of bounds. What can you tell me as to what rules and regulations are being violated, if any?

What do you think about having 80 teams in the Big Dance? Here's how it should be set up. I think if you win your conference; then you are automatically in. Get rid of the two groups in the same conference (big east, big 12,sec,ect.). The regular season champs do not have to play in the conference tournament. Here's where it's gets good. In each of the 4 brackets; 2 teams will play for the 13-16 seed. The team with the higher RPI should get home court. This would not intefere with the NIT.

A freshmen student athlete does poorly in his first Fall semester, goes on academic probation and in the spring improves, but is allowed to leave after the drop out deadline to a death of his grandmother due to a devastating illness of cancer which rendered the student unable to continue his education, then immediately put on academic hold restriction by the college of Engineering until he decided to resume his college career. The University did not see fit to undue the students failed Fall semester which during a period in which his grandmothers health due to her age of 74 and her affliction with an aggressive stage four cancer had the student unable to focus on his fall and spring semesters in 2003 and 2004.
His father was told by a psychiatrist about his son the students emotional and psycological outlook. The doctor mentioned that the grieving process normally takes two to three years. In his sons case it took almost three year.
The student athlete is now in college after a productive summer at his college and continued into the fall of 2006 after being taken off of academic hold restriction from the college of Mechanical Engineering.
My question is if a student athlete is unable to continue his education due to a death in the family does the NCAA recognize the greiving process as a means to suspend the student atheletes NCAA statues? And if not why does the NCAA suspend the Morman Atheletes two years for going on a mission.

I have a question on my son's eligibility, as in how many years has he left to play. He graduated high school in 2003 and then sat out a year. He enrolled at Valdosta State University in the fall of 2004 and played JV football' with no varsity action. Then he played spring ball in 2005.
In the fall of 2005 he did not play anything. He then played spring ball in 2006, and is playing JV ball so far this season (fall 2006). If he doesn't play varsity this year, only JV, how many years of eligibility we he have left? Thanks for your help!

I redshirted in wrestling my first year in fall 2004 for a D1 university. I was Hurt and had some family problems. I did not do so well on my grades and my family would not help me pay for college anymore. The last two year i have been working and making money. I plan on returning to a college or University and playing sports but not a D1 college. Since you have to have so much of your major done by certain points does that make me not eligible to wrestle anymore because i dont have the % ment. If so can I go off my college transcripts and enter college again as a freshman with no credits and start over. Also if i am not able to wrestle would i be aloud to play football or do all sports run off of the same five years to complete four years of competition. Basically what im trying to say is do i have the option of playing football for four years if i go back to school in fall 2007.

My son "redshirted" at a D111 school in 02-03, did not do well in school and flunked out; went part time at another school the next year(d3) while he had 2 knee operations(03-04)-attended and played the the next year at the same school(04-05). I had 2 back operations and a heart attack, and my son took a year off school to help us in North Carolina(05-06).
My son took up residence in NC and this year will play at a D2 school. The compliance officer says no(that he transferred to a 3rd school). Confusing......I understand---but he is going from a d3 to a d2. There obviously is no money involved at the (3-level) . He has 3 years eligibility left and does better in school if he is playing basketball.

If a parent of a HS vasity football player (Junior) has a personal close friend who is a college assist. football coach, can the parent still accept tickets to football games if the HS player does not use them and has his name on "the list" of players who can go by and pick up a ticket if he chooses to go to the game? I have been recieving tickets for years but now I've been told that if I accept them I will be violating NCAA rules and my son and/or his team could be in trouble? The coach has placed my son's name on the official list of kids that can go by and pick up a ticket to any game. He doesn't use the tickets that I recieve and this is not a recuiting gift...just extra tickets I recieve from a friend (who happens to be a coach) ??

Are the following statements true? A divison 1 collegiate coach in Women's Volleyball cannot coach a local sports team/club IN COMPETITION during a quiet or dead recruiting period. They can, however, coach the local sports team/club in a PRACTICE during the quiet or dead periods, but they have to record it as one of their 80 total evaluation days. And, the only players that they can coach on a local sports team/club are those who live within 50 miles of the university. thanks!

Does everyone on the team lose a year of egibility due to this? cause technically the team has forfeited every game.

I currently play baseball for a NCAA DII institution in MD (near DC) that competes in softball, baseball, track, x-country, w/m soccer, and w/m basketball. I have a question regarding equality in sports. Is it fair that our college can provide facilities for some sports and not provide for others?

Here is the situation:

Our baseball, along with all of the other athletic teams have always been terrible since the inception of sports at our college. However, our baseball team was appointed a new head coach last year and he began to turn our program around tremendously (we won 7 games in 2005 and went 34-22 in 2006). He's proven that he can do just about anything with what little we have (we have the smallest DII budget in the country also). He however wants to bring in the big name players now that he has established a good program so that we can be known as one of the nations best. Along with our EXTREMELY limited budget, he is also faced with a tougher problem. We are the only sport at our school that does not have on-campus facilities. let alone any facilities at all. The college hasn't even provided us with off-campus facilities to practice on, and we have to struggle with finding a facility to play on. Is there an NCAA rule or bylaw that can mend this issue? Is there a law that can prove that we are being treated inadequately? If so please respond. We're tired of the poor support that our school has given us. We've already given something to the college with being given nothing...it would be nice if they could sometime give us something back in return.

Also, if you would like to continue this conversation further i'd really appreciate it. I could really use the help. My email is kgoldsmi@cuc.edu

Thank You

Can a student athelete on a scholarship play in a bowl game if he flunks one class and does well in all the others?

At 10:18 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I was watching college football tonight and they mentioned a new NCAA rule that allows transfers after the student graduates assuming they have eligibility left. I'm trying to determine if my son has any eligibility left. Here are the pertinent facts:
1. Graduated HS in Spring 2003 & started at a D1 school in Fall of 2003.
2. He was on the soccer team but did not play in any games due to medical issues (2 concussions).
3. He transferred to an NAIA school for the Fall 2004 season and did play soccer.
4. Transferred to a D1 school that does not have mens soccer starting w/ the Spring 2005 semester.
5. Will graduate Spring of 2008.
6. Grades and progress towards a degree are not an issue.
Questions:
Does he have any chance of another year of eligibility if he:
1. Graduates Spring 2008
2. Applies for a medical redshirt year for Fall 2003
3. Transfers to another institution (He'll be working on his MBA anyway).

My son signed a football scholarship at a D2 school. He played last year and got paid according to his signed scholarship. This year he signed a scholarship for a little more as he earned a starting job as a true sophomore. The school shorted our scholarship money applied by over $800. We were told the difference would be paid in the spring and now the spring is the same incorrect $800 short amount that posted in the fall. What recourse do we have for our son to get paid the scholarship amount he signed for?

My brother is a red shirt sophomore walk on at a large university in the southeast, his coach (an assistant coach) has slighted him various times in the last month. Last year during football season camp in August he kept addressing my brother with an ethnic name that was not his own--even though he knew his true name. This was somewhat prejudiced, in my opinion. He did not stop until another more noted player addressed the coach and corrected him by saying, "that's not his name, his name is ____." He is not giving him the same opportunities than other walk ons and younger players are getting when he performs just as well or better than them. They even tell him they see the unfairness. What would be the best way for him to try and resolve this in a respectful and mature way. He is not one to complain and has kept quiet for so long hoping that things would change...he does not want to be disrespectful, but I feel it is time to defend himself. Please, any advice would truly help.

First off I want to say awesome blog! I had a quick question which
I'd like to ask if you do not mind. I was interested to find out how you center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing. I've had trouble clearing my thoughts
in getting my ideas out. I truly do enjoy writing however it just
seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are usually lost
just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or hints?
Thank you!

Hey there! I understand this is somewhat off-topic however I had
to ask. Does running a well-established website
such as yours require a massive amount work? I'm completely new to running a blog however I do write in my journal on a daily basis. I'd like
to start a blog so I can share my personal experience
and thoughts online. Please let me know if you have
any suggestions or tips for new aspiring bloggers. Appreciate it!

Undeniably believe that which you said. Your favorite
justification seemed to be on the net the easiest thing to
be aware of. I say to you, I definitely get annoyed
while people consider worries that they just don't know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and also defined out the whole thing without having side effect , people can take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks

My daughter plays soccer at her high school and I am interested in inviting the coach and some of the college soccer team players to join the girls for a meal. The parents volunteer and provide dinner to the high school girls junior varsity (freshmen and sophomores). Can we invite the college soccer team players and coach to the dinner? We want to initiate the contact, would this be a problem? The college is less than 10 miles from the high school. Coach would not be recruiting or handing out information to the high school girls. It's more of an opportunity for our girls to be inspired.

My son plays football. He redshirted his freshman year. Going into this year, his junior season he sustained a concussion. He was held out by a doctor for the season, did not play a down or even dress. What is his eligibility status?

I am 24 and begin college fall of 2011. I redshirted my freshman year at a D2 school and then the following year I was grey shirted due to the fact that I became academically ineligible. I've been attending the same university and have reached a place where I am academically eligible now. I never played a down and was never eligible to play. do I still have eligibility left to play now that I am academically eligible?

What are rules on concussion protocol if someone's college can't provide neurologist and has to take leave abscesses? Can they be excused or released from team? This is again school only provides cat scan. If athlete must leave to go neurologist can the coach dismiss player from team
